With every pregnancy comes a placenta! The placenta is a vital organ that develops during pregnancy to provide nourishment and oxygen to the growing fetus while also removing waste products. It forms early in pregnancy, beginning at around week 4 of gestation, and taking over from the yolk sac to begin exclusively caring for your baby at around 12 weeks gestation. The placenta forms from both fetal and maternal tissues, with the fetal portion arising from the same cells that develop into the baby, and the maternal portion coming from the lining of the uterus. Once fully formed at the end of the first trimester, it consists of a network of blood vessels that link the fetus to the mother's circulatory system. Through the placenta, nutrients like glucose and amino acids are transferred from the mother to the fetus, while carbon dioxide and waste products are removed. Additionally, the placenta produces hormones that support pregnancy, such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), progesterone, and estrogen. It plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy pregnancy and supporting fetal development until birth.

  • Placenta Previa: A condition where the placenta covers or is positioned very low in the uterus, potentially obstructing the cervix and complicating delivery.

  • Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR): Poor placental function can result in inadequate blood and nutrient supply to the fetus, causing restricted growth and development.

  • Stillbirth: In severe cases, placental dysfunction can lead to fetal death, either from inadequate oxygen or nutrient supply.

  • Gestational Diabetes: Placental hormones may impair insulin function, contributing to high blood sugar levels that can affect both the mother and baby.

  • Placenta Accreta: When the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall, making it difficult to detach after delivery and increasing the risk of hemorrhage.

  • Oligohydramnios: Insufficient amniotic fluid, often linked to placental insufficiency, can affect fetal development and increase the risk of preterm labor.

  • Preterm Labor: Placental problems can increase the risk of premature birth due to inadequate blood flow and hormonal regulation.

  • Chorioamnionitis: Infection of the membranes surrounding the fetus, which can be more likely if the placenta is compromised or damaged.


Monitoring the health of the placenta throughout pregnancy is essential. Regular prenatal check-ups and ultrasounds can help identify potential issues early on, allowing for timely interventions to ensure the health of both mother and baby.
